Instrument of the Musikmesse - tubanews.com, April 2005
Just weeks before arriving in Frankfurt, the staff of TubaNews.com was privileged to have a tour of the Hirsbrunner Factory in Sumiswald, Switzerland. It was there that we first met Peter Hirsbrunner and Matthias Vogt.
In Frankfurt, we enjoyed the friendly atmosphere around the Hirsbrunner booth which was shared with Mark Mr. Tuba Carter, Bob Tucci, Manfred Giosele and Rudolf Schwarz. Having the opportunity to compare the different makes of instruments in this booth was unique at the 2005 Frankfurt Musikmesse.
We did have an opportunity to play Matthias Vogt's Custom Hirsbrunner CC-290 Tuba. This particular instrument is special in that it is hand made, with love for the detail, by Matthias Vogt. For complete details of this instrument visit www.vogt-instruments.com.
This instrument is a 4/4 CC tuba, non-compensating, 5 rotor valves, made with rose brass. The intonation seemed very nice top to bottom, and the tone was warm but with some presence of upper overtones. The response was clean and warm with very little edge or bite, and it produced a very controlled sound at loud dynamics. The 1st and 5th slides are easily reachable with the left hand for low register intonation adjustments, and it is ergonomically a very comfortable instrument. Functionality of the rotor valve mechanism was particularly good.
